Virtual Assistant Extraordinaire Jessica Keyes’ journey to owning her own business – Virtual Assistant
Extraordinaire – took an interesting path. Keyes is a graduate of Connecticut’s Fairfield University, having
majored in international studies and minored in Russian and Eastern European studies. She then went on to
work with international business programs funded by the U.S. government. She’s also handled accounting and
marketing for residential and commercial construction firms, accounting for attorneys’ offices, human resources
and safety program development, and all levels of office management.

Along the way, Keyes recognized the need for seasoned and qualified professionals to relieve the pressures of
deadlines put upon business owners/managers doing the jobs of several people – and on a per-project basis.
This u assistance, coupled with today’s digital and wireless technology, heightens the efficiency of the process.

“I treat each client as an individual with special needs. My goal is to help them be empowered when it comes to
their own business,” said Keyes. She wants her clients to realize that tasks can be handled responsibly and
correctly by another professional, so that they can take care of other important issues.

Clients are “trained” on how to work with what is handed them. “This allows the client to utilize my services when
absolutely needed and gives them the freedom to do tasks themselves when funds are tight or they feel
motivated,” said Keyes.

As a virtual assistant, Keyes lends a hand to a variety of businesses, including health & fitness, those needing
event planning, and media. She also helps firms set up and maintain accounting systems. Depending on the
customer’s needs, her work can be done off-site or on-site, locally.

Tight deadlines sometimes come with the virtual project. For one client, a brochure needed to be completed and
sent to a printer in one night. Keyes designed the brochure while the client continued to work at his business; at
10:00pm the client reviewed a digital version of the brochure; edits were made and the project was sent to the
printer.

Some of Keyes’ clients go a step beyond the per-project business relationship. Captain Gus’ Lake Norman
Laugh Liner appointed her their event planner. Another, Primal Force, had her create their marketing
communications materials, including logo, Web site and advertising. She also created and staffed their business
expo booth.

A seasoned speaker, Keyes is the current president of Toastmasters at the Lake and has presented numerous
marketing and business plans. She offers a free, monthly marketing group – Marketing Matters – which has been
active for a year.

Ultimately, Keyes wants local businesses to know that, “Hiring a virtual assistant can reduce your stress and
increase your productivity.”
